Enhancements to Online Tool Handling Diversion Requests

Date
Aug 20, 2021

BNSF recently enhanced our Shipping Instruction Modifications (SIMs) online tool that customers can use to divert equipment, update or correct shipping instructions. When diverting a carload shipment, customers now have access to the following additional functionality and information in the SIMs tool:

  • Ability to put selected cars into the correct category, “Divertable vs. Re-bill,” sooner in the process, rather than going all the way through and having to start over if some cars must be re-billed
  • Trip plan comparison showing differences between “current destination trip plan” and “diversion destination trip plan”
  • Identified re-bill origin for increased transparency associated with re-bill

These enhancements will assist with decision-making in SIMs as well as provide improved efficiency through the request process.

In January, BNSF implemented several changes to our diversion policy, including the ability of customers to divert a loaded or empty carload shipment while it is offline on another railroad, prior to interchange. Please review this guide for more information regarding diversion policy, requests and best practices.
