In an effort to improve the fluidity and velocity of shipments moving to/from Canada, BNSF would like to remind customers regarding cross-border documentation requirements. Unnecessary delays can result if carload shipments are forced to hold by customs authorities.
According to the following item in BNSF Rules Book 6100-B (must be logged into BNSF Customer Portal for viewing), an inter-terminal switch charge per car will be assessed if a shipment lacks the proper documentation:
Item 8200 – Switching and Holding Charges on Cars To/From Canada Held for Customs Inspection
When carload shipments moving via any U.S./Canadian Border Crossing are held on the BNSF awaiting clearance of U.S. or Canadian Customs or U.S. or Canadian Government inspections to be performed, due to insufficient documentation, an intra-terminal charge in accordance with BNSF 8005-Series per car will be assessed against the party responsible for payment of the freight charges.
The charges provided in this item are in addition to applicable demurrage and storage charges as named in BNSF Demurrage Book 6004-Series or diversion or reconsignment charges as named in BNSF Diversion Book 6200-Series and BNSF 4022-Series, when applicable and will not be absorbed in whole or in part.
